Concrete Surface Profile Explained: Grinding vs Shot Blasting vs Etching

Coatings rarely fail because of the resin. They fail because the slab underneath was never opened up. Here is what surface profile means and how the three preparation methods compare.
What Concrete Surface Profile Actually Measures
Concrete surface profile, usually shortened to CSP, measures how rough a slab is once preparation is finished. ICRI 310.2R-2013 defines ten reference profiles, CSP 1 through CSP 10, running from a barely textured surface to a heavily fractured one. The result is checked against molded comparator chips rather than judged by eye.
The logic behind the numbers is straightforward: the thinner the coating, the less profile it needs, and the thicker the system, the more it needs. A thin-film or high-build garage coating generally wants the CSP 2 to 3 range. Too little profile and the coating lies across a closed surface with nothing to grip; too much and the texture telegraphs up through a thin film.

Diamond Grinding: The Default for Garage and Basement Slabs
Diamond grinding is the standard approach on residential slabs, producing roughly CSP 1 through 3 depending on tooling and passes. Grinding does three jobs at once. It mills off the builder's curing compound, the invisible film that sinks more first-time coatings than any other single cause. Shot Blasting: More Profile Than Most Garages Need
Shot blasting throws steel media at the slab under a sealed hood and recovers it magnetically, fracturing the surface into roughly the CSP 3 to 7 band. That is more profile than a garage coating calls for, which is why it belongs to warehouse and production floors. Across a large open bay it is fast and consistent.
The limits are geometric and chemical. A blaster cannot reach the last few inches at a wall, around a column, or into a corner, so those areas are ground separately and the textures blended before coating. Soft contamination defeats it too: oil, grease, and mastic clog the machine instead of coming off. Acid Etching: Why It Keeps Disappointing People
Etching is the method packaged in consumer garage kits, and it is a common reason a weekend floor lifts within a season. An acid solution reacts with cement paste to roughen the surface chemically. It is inexpensive, needs no equipment, and does far less than the box implies.
- It does not remove curing compound, sealer, or old paint. Acid cannot profile concrete it never reaches.
- It does nothing about oil and grease, which concentrate where the tires sit.
- It leaves salt residue unless fully neutralized and rinsed, and that residue ends up under the coating.
- It cannot flatten anything. High spots, burnished troweling, and old patch work all survive it.
- It needs a floor that can be flooded and squeegeed dry, which most attached garages cannot.
- It offers no way to verify the result against a comparator chip, so profile becomes a guess rather than a number.
Profile Is Not the Only Gate Before the First Coat
A perfectly profiled slab will still reject a coating if moisture or temperature is wrong. Vapor emission is measured under ASTM F1869 against 3 lb per 1,000 sq ft per 24 hours, with the test in place for 60 to 72 hours. Internal relative humidity is measured under ASTM F2170, with probes set at 40 percent of slab depth for slab-on-grade, a minimum 24-hour equilibration, and three sensors for the first 1,000 sq ft.
Temperature runs on its own schedule. Substrate should be above 50F, cure time roughly doubles for every 18F below 70F, and the slab needs to sit at least 5F above the dew point or amine blush can leave a hazy film on a cold cure. Questions Worth Asking Before Anyone Starts Grinding
Bids on identical square footage can land far apart, and prep is almost always the reason. Stripping a failed coating, chasing mastic, rebuilding joints, or patching spalls all add passes that never show up in the finished photos. Mechanical preparation is the reliable path on a slab that has held vehicles. Etching cannot remove curing compound, sealer, or oil, cannot flatten the surface, and cannot be verified against a comparator chip. On a bare, clean, uncontaminated interior slab it produces some texture, but a Maryland garage floor that has been through winters of road salt and parked traffic is not that floor.
