Preparing a Garage for Epoxy Install Day: What to Move and What to Expect

A coating install moves fast once the grinder comes off the trailer. The slow part is everything the homeowner controls: clearing the slab, settling the finish, and planning where the cars sleep.

Why the garage has to be empty

Garage floor coatings run wall to wall.   • A spare fridge or chest freezer, which needs a powered spot elsewhere for several days
  • Paint, solvents, and anything that should not collect fine dust
  • Low-hanging cords, hoses, and bikes on pulleys that could snag grinder hoses

What day one actually looks like

Prep is most of the job. An unheated garage in December is a much harder conversation than the same garage in early October.

Cure time: walking on it versus parking on it

New coatings take foot traffic well before they take a pickup truck. The exact windows depend on the chemistry — polyaspartic topcoats cure faster than most epoxies, which is how some systems compress into a single working day — so get the walk-on and drive-on times for the specific system in writing, and remember that a cool slab stretches both.

Park too early and tires can print or lift a surface that has not reached full hardness. Build the car-storage plan around the drive-on time, not the install date, and add margin if a cold snap lands mid-cure.

Decisions to settle before the truck shows up

Finish first: solid color or flake, and which blend — darker, multi-tone flake and metallic finishes hide the mud, road grime, and salt residue a Maryland winter tracks in far better than a pale solid. Joint treatment second: whether control joints get filled flush or honored as clean lines is a look-and-function call to make before coating day, not during it.
